This is a good book for beginners, though it may leap into the skill of reading music a little quickly. It does cover many of the essential skills needed to begin playing trumpet, like fingerings, posture, note-reading exercises, and most importantly, a recording so students can hear some of what is being played (not all items in the book are on the CD). That being said, more explanation of some techniques would be helpful, as well as ways to practice, recordings to listen to, and maybe even some history. Though I recommend this book for beginners, a good supplement to it that includes all of the items listed above is: 'Sound the Trumpet: How to Blow Your Own Horn."

I hadn't played a trumpet for over sixty years. So, I didn't think I could pick up a horn and start where I left off.
Instead, I made the wise decision to purchase this package. The DVD was perfect in getting me started again.
I didn't play the CD, which follows each exercise, using a CD player. I brought the CD into iTunes, which made using it very easy. I'm now up to Track 43 and, while I still have a long way to go for an eighty-year-old, I feel I'm getting there one day at a time.

Highly recommended (and worth the small amount Amazon is asking).

This book is pretty comprehensive. It takes you from holding the trumpet/cornet all the way to playing, in time, to music on the CD. I would have liked more info on how to get different octaves on the instrument. They tried, but maybe a book just can't provide everything. I would seriously consider this book if you are just beginning and want to learn the instrument on your own.

An outstanding book which starts with the basics and works with you through some easy level popular songs -- all lessons are on CD and allow you to shift the balance feature of your player to play background music or with instructional trumpet. A smaller book, so recommend also purchasing a fold out fingering chart (one is included in the book, but its much smaller).
